Faux burl wood box
Table

Materials:

wood planter box to use as a table base
round wood tabletop
semi-gloss white latex paint
raw sienna acrylic craft paint
latex glaze medium
extender for latex, medium
2" chip brush
2" bristle brush
water-based polyurethane sealer

Steps:

1. Paint a base coat on the tabletop and planter box using semi-gloss white latex paint. Let dry.

2. Mix one tablespoon raw sienna acrylic craft paint, one tablespoon latex glazing medium and one tablespoon extender medium to create a glaze. This should be enough to cover the tabletop, but you'll need to make a second batch to cover the base.

3. Working with each surface separately (tabletop then the base), use a brush to apply solution over the entire surface.

4. Immediately pat your fingers and hand in a circle around the circumference of the round top (or in a semi-circle on the four sides of the base). Your fingers will be removing the glaze mixture, creating a burl-like pattern.

5. As you move around in a circle, periodically wipe your hand clean so that the amount of glaze it picks up remains constant.

6. Continue to make the same circles until the entire top is covered. It should resemble the inner "rings" on a cut tree trunk.

7. Once completed, take a dry chip brush and lightly brush straight strokes over the paint treatment. Make a fan-like sunburst shape from the center of the ring out to the edges to soften and feather the rings.

8. Take a bristle brush lightly loaded with additional paint/glaze mixture and randomly swipe it in straight sunburst strokes on the top to resemble the uneven dark and light of real wood.

9. Let dry at least eight hours.

10. Finish with a sealer coat of water-based polyurethane.

Box

Materials:

wood box
black acrylic craft paint
raw sienna acrylic craft paint
latex glaze medium
latex extender medium
1-1/2" chip brush
1" bristle brush
paste wax
steel wool or sandpaper
water-based polyurethane sealer
tack cloth

Steps:

1. Paint the box, inside and out, with black acrylic paint. Let dry.

2. Mix 1/2 tablespoon raw sienna acrylic craft paint with 1/2 tablespoon of latex glaze and 1/2 tablespoon of extender.

3. Apply the mixture to half of the top of the lid of the box.

4. Lightly drag the chip brush through the glaze in slightly wavy stripes, leaving 1" between stripes.

5. In between the wavy stripes, take a one-inch bristle brush and wiggle it side to side as you move down the area between the waves, creating a burl effect.

6. Repeat steps 3 through 5 on the remaining section of the lid and on the side edges of the lid. Let all areas dry thoroughly.

7. On the painted black base of the box, rub small amounts of paste wax over the edges and on random areas on the sides.

8. Paint the entire base with raw sienna paint, and let dry.

9. Using steel wool or sandpaper, lightly sand the edges. This will reveal the black undercoat for a weathered paint look.

10. Wipe the surface clean with a tack cloth.

11. Finish by sealing with water-based polyurethane.
