Another viewer letter from South Carolina, this one from Tabitha Webb of Fort Mill, included pictures of a wall vase that Tabitha made for her grandmother's living room. After giving the room a makeover by painting and installing two-inch wide molding two-thirds of the way down the wall, Tabitha decided that one of the walls looked a little bare. So, she cut the leftover molding into graduated lengths to make a "flowerpot on the wall."

Starting with the shortest length at the bottom, Tabitha attached the strips of molding to the wall using finishing nails then sinking them with a nail set. Leaving a small space between each length of wood, and working her way up from the smallest to the second longest piece, she went back and filled in the holes with spackling then sanded everything smooth. The longest piece was placed at the bottom to serve as the saucer. Tabitha then attached fake vines and flowers to the wall using adhesive-backed tabs to hold them in place, positioning them so they appeared to be coming out of the vase. It was all very effective. Tabitha also added that you could use rubber-stamped or cutout wallpaper flowers as well.

I made a version of the flowerpot by cutting paper strips equal to the 1-1/2-inch wide molding (figure A). Then I took the paper strips and molding to the lumberyard and had the molding cut to match the strips, including the angled sides.
