The Shaker box top that we covered with a broken tile pattern was more stylized than a real broken tile pattern in that all of the cut pieces had perfectly straight edges, and all were placed the same distance apart. It was put together like a jigsaw puzzle.
Steps:
- Cut several pieces of differently colored Con-Tact paper. Peel and place on a piece of glass or Plexiglas.
- Draw the blade of a craft knife through the Con-Tact paper a number of times to make many small pieces.
- Pick up pieces with the blade knife and place on a pre-painted and sanded box top, starting in the center and working out to the outside edge.
- Coat with polyurethane or Dimensional Magic.
Photo Box Top
This was made like the Con-Tact-covered shaker box top except that instead of Con-Tact Paper, a photocopy enlargement was used so that every piece had to be individually glued into place.
Before cutting the photocopy, coat the surface with a protective acrylic coating or fixative. This is doubly important if you will be using this in conjunction with the Dimensional Magic. After coating the surface, cut a circle roughly the size of the box top. When applying the pieces, work from the center out
