Figure A
Materials:

medium beige latex paint (satin finish)
pencil
level
1/2" wide masking tape
1/2 tsp. dry earth-tone powder pigment
small clear glass bowl
1/4 cup Guinness or other stout beer
badger brush
soft bristle brush
oil-based varnish (NOT water-based)
blue painter's tape
latex glazing liquid
black latex paint
1/2" wide artist's brush

Steps:

  1. Prime, and then roll wall with beige paint. Let it dry overnight.
  2. Draw a grid of 18-inch panels. Center masking tape over lines.
  3. Place powder pigment in bowl; pour in beer and mix thoroughly.
  4. Dip brush into beer mixture and create long vertical brush strokes onto wall--it will go on like watercolor. Some of this will bleed under the tape, which is fine as the tape just acts as a guide. Continue creating a series of striations working in one panel at a time.
  5. As the beer paint begins to set up, use the bristled brush to soften the grain to create a pore effect (hold the brush at a slight angle). Let dry.
  6. Seal the surface (this must be done). Do not use a water-based varnish as it will dissolve the pattern. Let dry overnight.
  7. Put a strip of blue tape on either side of the masking tape. To prevent the black grid lines from bleeding under the blue tape, brush glazing liquid over the edge of the masking tape where it meets the exposed background paint.
  8. Load artist's brush with black and apply two coats. Let dry and carefully peel tape off (figure A).
