Figure B
Interior designer James Evinczik demonstrates various techniques for creating a woodgrained finish.

Materials:

wood
oil-based primer
sandpaper
caulk
base-coat color
oil enamel
selection of artists' oil paints (It can take up to 10 colors to make some woodgrain colors.)
linseed oil/turpentine glaze mix (Handle carefully in a well-ventilated area.)
assortment of natural bristle and sponge artist brushes
tissue
newsprint
marine varnish

Steps:

  1. Prime and sand wood. Caulk any marred areas to the wood surface if necessary.

  2. Select base-coat color.

  3. Select the artist oil colors that will be used in glaze mixture (in addition to the amounts of each of these colors). Test samples of glaze colors on base color (figure A).

  4. Add the glaze mixture to the paints that have been mixed.

  5. Select tools to be used to create the visual pattern.

  6. Apply base coat and sand again.

  7. Mix paints together and test by applying resulting glaze mixture to see if they give the desired result. Practice until you are comfortable with the colors and technique.

  8. Apply glaze mixture on the piece, then apply a light coating of the clear linseed oil/turpentine with a clean brush. Blend and grain the piece (figure B).

  9. Create visual texture using tissue or newsprint.

  10. Antique recesses by applying another glaze coat. When dry, coat with marine varnish for exterior application. Regular interior varnish will work for interior application.

Tips

  • Do research to determine what type of original woodgraining was at the historical site you are trying to match or duplicate.

  • Study the technique that was originally used if you are copying existing work.

  • Paint will dry darker as it sets up, so take that into consideration.
