Figure A
Decorative painter Marie McGehee joins Cindy Piccoli to demonstrate a malachite finish that has become one of the hottest looks in faux finishing.

Materials:

black latex paint
green oil-based paint
turpentine
combing tools- either rubber or metal
3" natural bristle brushes
clear, high gloss varnish

Steps:
  1. Wipe off any dust, making sure the surface is clean. If the surface has been painted previously lightly sand and dust.
  2. Paint the surface with two coats of black latex paint. Let dry.
  3. Using a three-inch brush, paint a thin coat of the green oil paint over the black painted surface. Do not apply green paint too thickly; let some of the black show through.
  4. Using the combing tool(s), create a fan-like pattern over the surface (figure A). Make both full circles and half circles in the paint, letting the edges of the pattern overlap. Continue to drag the comb through the green paint, pulling the green paint away from the black surface. Use two or more comb sizes and textures for the best effect.
  5. When the surface is completely combed, let it dry for 24 to 48 hours.
  6. Top with two or three coats of the clear, high gloss varnish. Comb between each coat and let dry.
