Delta Technical Coatings' accessory designer Shea Szachara makes a faux marble plant stand quickly and inexpensively using a sponge painting technique. She demonstrates how to pick up colors with a sponge, apply them in stages, and how to add "veins" with a brush.

Materials:

30-inch table with a wooden top and metal legs
Delta Ceramcoat acrylic paints: Hunter Green, Pale Mint Green, Cactus, 14k Gold, and Black
wood sealer
satin interior/exterior varnish
1" foam brush
medium-hole sponge
#1 liner brush
sandpaper
paper towels
palette or foam plate
water

Preparation:

  1. With the foam brush, apply sealer to all wooden surfaces, and allow it to dry.
  2. Sand the table, and wipe it clean with a damp paper towel.
  3. Base-coat all surfaces with two smooth coats of black paint.
Painting:
  1. Squeeze a few lines of Hunter Green, Cactus and Gold on a palette or plate.
  2. Wet and wring out the sponge.
  3. With the foam brush, dampen the top of the table.
  4. Before the top dries, pick up the paints on the sponge and apply them to the top and sides of the table in wavy areas (as opposed to narrow lines) in a "branch" design. If an area of the table dries before it is painted, be sure to moisten it again before painting.
  5. Allow the table to dry completely.
  6. Repeat the first five steps, but this time, include Pale Mint Green.
  7. While the top is still wet, pick up a mix of colors on the liner brush, and paint cracks on the table along the "branches" created in step 4. Continue over the edges where necessary.
  8. Allow the paint to dry.
  9. With the foam brush, follow the instructions on the label and apply the varnish.
