Designer Michelle Newman shares how to take a plain wooden box and turn it into a decorative copper laden box. The design was inspired by a trip Newman took to Australia. The elegant decorative box is inexpensive to make and is the perfect size for a coffee table or end table.

Materials:

wooden box and ball feet (Walnut Hollow - candle box #17020P)
white and red acrylic paint (Liquitex)
1 roll of 32-gauge copper sheet metal (Lefranc & Bourgeois Metalworks)
copper leaf (Houston Art, item #205)
3M spray adhesive
brush
Krylon Crystal Clear sealer
old scissors
wooden stylus and empty ball-point pen
foam cushion or phone book
stump (available at art supply stores)
carpenter's glue
Liquid Nails heavy-duty mastic
Krylon copper leafing pen
putty knife

Steps:

  1. Paint a white base coat on a wooden box. Allow to dry.
  2. Paint the box with a cinnabar red acrylic paint. Allow to dry.
  3. Spray the body of the box with spray adhesive; allow to dry. Add copper leaf sheets to all four sides. Remove excess with a soft brush and apply a clear sealer.
  4. Photocopy a design to fit on the box top. Use old scissors to cut the copper larger than the top to form a lip on the underside of the box top.
  5. Tape the design onto the metal and trace with a wooden stylus or empty ball-point pen.
  6. Place the copper right-side (design-side) down onto a piece of foam or phone book. Rub the stump back and forth between the lines to create an embossed or raised area (figure A).
  7. Turn the copper right-side up. Use the stump to press out the sides if any buckling has occurred. Use a wooden stylus to further outline the design to give it more depth.
  8. Turn the copper over once again, right-side down, and fill the crevasses with carpenter's glue to maintain the dimension. Allow to dry.
  9. Apply heavy-duty mastic to the top of the box and use a putty knife to spread it on the top and on sides (where the copper will fold over).
  10. To create the feet, place wooden balls on chopsticks and color with a copper leafing pen. Glue to the bottom of the box.
