Materials:
mica powders (Perfect Fx pigments) in desired colors
platinum gold leaf
Duo Embellishing adhesive
18-karat gold leafing pen
acrylic base paint (deep burgundy)
carved wood pieces
unfinished wood tray
stencil
soft brushes
sponge
foam brush
300-grit sandpaper
Steps:
Base Painting
- Apply one coat of gesso or primer.
- Base-paint wood with acrylic paint in deep burgundy. Sand lightly between coats.
Platinum Leafing
- Use small foam brush to apply Duo Adhesive to areas of carved piece to be leafed.
- Allow to get tacky then lay leaf on adhesive (figure A). Pat down with very soft artist brush.
- Allow to set up at least one hour, and then gently brush excess leaf off areas with soft brush.
Mica powder (Pearl Fx)
- Use foam brush to apply Duo Embellishing adhesive to areas of carved piece to be gilded with mica powders.
- Allow to get tacky. Pour small amount of selected color of mica powder into plastic container.
- Dip one end of dry sponge into mica and gently paint onto adhesive. Allow to set up, and then brush away excess with a soft brush (figure B).
Stenciling with Mica Powders
- Lay stencil over dry, flat base-painted surface.
- Use artist brush to paint Duo Adhesive in open areas of stencil. Then lift up stencil and follow instructions for mica powders.
- Outline finished stenciled area with 18-karat gold leafing pen.
- Allow project to cure 24 hours then apply satin or gloss acrylic finish.
