plaster obelisk or other accessory
white primer
Durable Colors (Olive #53320)
FolkArt Artists' Pigments (Asphaltum #476 and Burnt Umber #462)
FolkArt Artists' Varnish (Gloss Finish)
FolkArt Glazing Medium
water-based gold leaf adhesive
imitation gold leaf remnants
soft cotton rag (lint free)
waxed freezer paper

Steps:
- Paint the obelisk with white primer. Once dry, apply base coat in desired color.
- When the base coat color is dry, apply gold leaf adhesive where the remnants (leftover pieces) will go. Allow adhesive to turn clear and become sticky (about 20 minutes).
- Sprinkle or distribute the remnants onto the sticky adhesive. Try to apply them in an artistic fashion.
- Cover the gold leaf with a piece of waxed freezer paper and rub it to be sure the remnants are firmly adhered to the adhesive. Remove freezer paper and leave overnight.
- Burnish the piece with the rag to remove excess remnants.
- Antique the piece by mixing the glazing medium with equal parts of Burnt Umber and Asphaltum acrylic paint. Brush-coat the surface, then remove the excess glaze with a soft rag. Let dry.
- Apply a gloss varnish to bring out the sheen of the metallic leaf. This step will also seal and protect the piece.
