Materials:

imitation gold and copper leaf
metal leaf adhesive
Durable Colors - Oxblood
Plaid matte finish acrylic sealer
3" base coat brush - Silver Brush Ltd.
3/4" wash brush - Silver Brush Ltd.
soft cotton cloth
vinegar
salt
bleach
cheesecloth
soft brush
waxed freezer paper

Steps:

  1. Use the 3" brush to coat any desired surface with oxblood paint. If needed, sand the piece and apply a second coat. Allow to dry.

  2. Using the 3/4" wash brush, apply a thin coat of metal leaf adhesive. Allow the adhesive to turn clear and become sticky.

  3. Attach metal leaf to the surface by placing a piece of freezer paper (waxy side down) on the leaf and hand rub. The leaf will stick to the paper and be easy to move to the surface.

  4. Press the leaf on the surface and then brush with a soft brush to ensure complete contact with the surface. Allow to dry.

  5. Polish the metal leaf by gently rubbing in a circular motion using a soft cotton cloth.

  6. For the gold leaf: dab bleach on the metal leaf using a piece of cheesecloth. As the bleach dries it will react with the metal leaf to create a patina finish.

  7. For the copper leaf, wet the surface with vinegar and then sprinkle it liberally with salt. Cover the piece with a piece of cheesecloth soaked in vinegar. As the cheesecloth dries, the chemical reaction will take place creating a patina finish. When the cheesecloth is dry, remove it and lightly brush away any excess salt.

  8. Finish the pieces by spraying with matte acrylic sealer.
