Host Renai Ellison shows how to use recycled and handmade papers to create a faux -stone tiled wall
(see photo at right).
Materials:
pencil
metal ruler
art paper that looks somewhat like stone
masking tape
wallpaper paste
roller or brayer
Steps:
- Use a pencil and ruler to find the center of the wall, then make a cross down the middle, halfway from the top to the bottom and from side to side. Mark lightly.
- Tear out art paper in squares that look like tile blocks (figure A). Tear the paper flat against the edge of the metal ruler that is held down on top of the paper on a flat surface, so that all of the edges will be slightly uneven.
- Starting in the center of the wall, work both vertically and horizontally, placing paper tiles on the wall with masking tape (figure B). Leave about 1/8 inch between squares for "grout" lines.
- Starting in the center again, crumple each square of paper (figure C) before applying to the wall to give it an aged, marbled look.
- Use wallpaper paste to apply squares to wall, pressing paper flat with roller (figure D). Allow to dry.
* Note: When painting a base coat on a wall, use a light, natural color such as gray or taupe, so that it will look similar to grout between the paper squares.
