Materials:
painter's drop cloth
acrylic medium varnish
acrylic paints
hand-made papers
triangle/straightedge
water
Methylcellulose
soft rubber brayer
scissors
Steps:
- Cut drop cloth to desired size and prime it with varnish. Allow to dry. Paint the entire canvas with the darkest color being used to ensure the off-white background doesn't show through and allow to dry for four hours.
- Paint papers in desired colors if necessary (figure A).
- Use a triangle/straightedge to mark the backside of painted paper into geometric shapes (figure B). Cut the shapes out.
- Mix one part water with three parts methylcellulose. Allow to sit for at least one hour. Brush mixture onto the back of the painted papers; position them as desired (starting from the center and moving out) and smooth them with a brayer (figure C).
- Trim cloth to chosen size and add border trim by overlapping papers onto the backside of the project.
