Materials:
Kraftables Mom's Memory Case by Mixed Nuts (or any other memory box you might have)
several pieces of colored natural papers to tear into random shapes
three large sheets of natural papers for the base coat of the box
decoupage medium*
upholstery tacks
sponge brushes
* Mod Podge by Plaid was used for demonstration purposes, but any decoupage adhesive or medium will work.
Steps:
- Pre-assemble the memory box, and mark with a pencil each external surface, then disassemble.
- Lay out the pieces on large sheets of the natural papers, external sides facing the paper. Trace a loose outline around each piece, leaving at least an extra inch for overlapping the edging.
- Using a sponge brush, apply Mod Podge directly onto the box pieces. While it's still wet, place the piece onto the paper, and press firmly. Turn the piece over, and smooth out the paper.
- In the same manner, apply Mod Podge to the paper that will wrap around the edging. Press the paper firmly onto the edge and over the back of the piece. Fold or tear the paper to completely cover the edges.
- Repeat steps 1 through 4 on all external sides.
- To cover the internal sides, measure the exposed box areas, outline them lightly on paper, and hand-tear these pieces to create a loose, flowing edge instead of a straight edge. Apply papers as above.
- Hand-tear several random shapes from the various natural papers then experiment with the layout to create leaves, branches, swirls, etc. Apply with Mod Podge.
- Coat all pieces with a topcoat of Mod Podge, and let it dry for two to three hours.
- Assemble the box, and press upholstery tacks into the edging. Apply craft glue to the tips of the tacks to help keep them in place. To apply the tacks to the face of pieces, use a hammer and lightly tap them into place.
Tips:
- For extra durability and permanent protection, coat the box with an acrylic sealer.
- To prevent undesired color bleeds, first test the decoupage adhesive on scrap papers.
- If the natural paper is torn or otherwise damaged, "repair" it by hand-tearing another piece, and applying it over the mistake with the decoupage medium. The fibers from the torn edge will blend in with the paper underneath.
