Guests Patricia Orlando and Sheila Riach apply a decoupage technique to an unfinished piece of wood to produce an aged appearance. The piece is then embellished with motifs. This method may be applied to frames, boxes, and nearly any other wooden object.
Materials:
unfinished wood piece
sandpaper
Paint Effects Woodwash in desired background color motifs
acrylic paint for motifs
shellac
craft knife
gum arabic or water-soluble white glue
Paint Effects Craquelure
artist's oil or gilt cream
turpentine
paint brush
Steps:
- Lightly sand the wood to make it smooth.
- Paint the background with Woodwash.
- Photocopy the motifs before using them. Reduce or enlarge them to the size you desire.
- Paint the copied designs with acrylic paint. If you want to give them an aged look, use a wash of coffee or tea.
- Shellac the motifs to stiffen the paper.
- Cut out and arrange the motifs on the wood piece.
- Use gum arabic or white glue diluted with water to attach motifs to wood piece. Be sure to spread glue on the edges of the motif. Remove excess glue with a damp cloth.
- Let the glue dry and coat the piece with a layer of shellac.
- Use Craquelure to give the piece an antique look.
- Rub in gilt cream to highlight the crackled finish. Remove any excess gilt cream with turpentine.
