Figure C
Susan Pickering Rothamel of US ArtQuest shows how to add elegance to a plain glass plate by using a decoupage technique to adhere dried and pressed flowers, fruits and leaves to the back side of the plate.

Materials:

clear glass plate
gloss adhesive
small paintbrush
dried and pressed flower, fruit and leaf designs
solvent-based nonporous ink
stamps
gilding adhesive
metallic gilding
acrylic-based paint

* Note: All the work will be done on the back of the plate, so the plate can be used to for serving foods.

Steps:

  1. Clean the plate thoroughly.

  2. With a small paintbrush, liberally apply gloss adhesive to a small area on the back of the plate, add a pressed flower, then apply more gloss over the flower (figure A).

  3. Use stamps and nonporous ink to add further designs and interest (figure B) .

  4. After the glue has dried and becomes clear and tacky, apply a generous amount of gilding adhesive over the designs.

  5. Apply gilding to the tacky surface. Brush away excess (figure C).

  6. To make the plate hand-washable, simply paint over the gilding with an acrylic-based paint.
