Designer Katheryn Bieber and host Renai Ellison create a storyboard mirror framed with family photographs that have been decoupaged on tiles.
Materials:
color copies of photographs
clear acrylic sealer
scissors
tiles
transparent ruler
paintbrushes
water-based decoupage medium (GemCraft brand was used on the show)
peg board or thin plywood
glue (Liquid Nails brand was used on the show)
glass cutter
goggles
gloves
mirror
household oil (for glass cutting)
T-square or straight-edge ruler
picture hangers
Steps:
- Scan or make color copies of photographs. Spray with sealer.
- Cut photos as desired to fit the tiles. You might want to cut some photos into several small squares to give the final piece a collaged look. Use a transparent ruler (figure A) to decide where cuts will fall on the photos.
- Arrange photos on tiles to make a collage.
- Brush decoupage medium onto tiles and the back of photos (figure B). Adhere photos to the tiles, then brush over the top of the photo with decoupage medium (figure C).
- Glue tiles to the peg board in the desired pattern with Liquid Nails brand glue (figure D).
- Dip the glass cutter into household oil, then score the mirror where you want to cut, using a T-square or straight-edge ruler as a guide (figure E).
- Once scored, the mirror can be broken along the edge of a table. Be sure to wear goggles and gloves when cutting glass.
- Glue mirror in the center of the tiles and let dry. Attach picture hanger on the back.
