Painting and Decorating Furniture, adds new life to an old desk by creating a unique look with decoupage and scrap papers.
Materials:
old desk
paper for decoupage: wrapping paper, postcards, other paper items
water-based primer
painter's tape
eggshell latex paint for a base coat
painting tools
latex or acrylic paint for desktop to match
background of decoupage pictures
small, sharp scissors
wallpaper paste
small paint
brush and some sponges
craft knife and ruler
water-based varnish
Steps:
- Coat the desk with a water-based primer and allow to dry. Mask off areas to be decoupaged, and paint the unmasked areas with a coordinating color of latex paint, and allow to dry.
- Mask the edges of the top of the desk, and paint the top a color to match the background of the decoupage papers. Cut out random images from the paper and position as desired on the desktop. Coat both sides of the paper with wallpaper paste, reposition on the desk, and allow to dry. Note: Don't worry about wrinkles in the paper; they will straighten as they dry.
- To add sheets of decoupage on the drawer fronts, first measure the surface's length and width and cut the paper to size using a craft knife. Coat both sides of the papers using wallpaper paste and position paper on the drawer front. Starting at the center and working toward the edges, gently smooth the paper with a sponge. Once the paper dries, use a craft knife to cut away any excess.
- Use a thin paintbrush to make any required touch-ups.
- Cover the entire decoupaged surface of the desk with a water-based varnish.
