Create the look of yesteryear with decoupage wall etchings.
Print rooms, in which black and white etchings were applied to the walls with glue and varnish, were all the rage in the 18th century. Typical arrangements were dense, geometric groupings placed atop brightly colored walls. Author and designer Cheryl MacLachlan shows you how to re-create this effect with stunning results.

Materials:

black and white photocopies of 4 etchings enlarged to 12" x 18"
photocopies of frames enlarged to accommodate etchings (cut away white interiors with a craft knife)
decoupage glue
varnish
foam brushes

Steps:
  1. Decide where the prints will be applied. The center of final grouping should be approximately at eye level.
  2. Layout the prints and frames on a floor or large surface to check proper spacing. The layout should be two prints on top and two below. Spacing between each of the frames should be small, about 2 to 3 inches.
  3. Make pencil marks on the wall that correspond with desired positions.
  4. Glue each print to wall. Then glue frame around print. If desired, other "ornaments" such as ribbons and rosettes from which prints are "suspended" can be photocopied and pasted into the arrangement.
  5. When all four prints are in place, cover each with a coat of varnish and allow to dry.
