Painted Technique Materials:
unfinished wood molding (#2 yellow pine is featured)
Benjamin Moore Aquavelvet #626
AquaCreme
AquaColors (Black, Earth Green, Earth Brown, Dark Brown)
course steel wool
paintbrush
old set of keys
wood chisel
sanding block (medium )
Steps:
1. Distress the molding by hitting it randomly with keys. Use a chisel to shave some higher spots to represent wear and tear over time.
2. Apply one to two base coats of #626 allowing it to dry between layers.
3. Mix 40 percent Earth Brown, 25 percent Dark Brown, 25 percent Black and 10 percent Earth Green with Aquacreme to create a dark brown glaze. Lightly brush mixture over the molding. While wet, use steel wool to wipe most of it off so it goes into the recessed areas. Let dry.
4. Add more age/distress by sanding certain areas to expose some raw wood beneath .
Gold Leaf Technique
Materials:
wood stain
brushes
gold foil sizing
gold foil
white pickling paste
rags
polyurethane
Steps:
1. Stain wood as desired and let dry.
2. Brush two coats of sizing over trim and let dry until tacky.
3. Put gold foil over trim and use fingers to rub some into the sizing. Repeat until desired effect is achieved.
4. Brush pickling paste over trim and wipe off with a rag.
5. Protect finish with polyurethane.
