Figure C
Designer Donna Dewberry finishes a papier-mache box with crackle techniques, followed by an aging process and a handpainted motif.

Materials:

steel wool
water-based crackling medium
paintbrushes
acrylic paints
sponges
spray sealer
antiquing medium

Steps:

  1. Use steel wool to rough up the surface of the box.

  2. Apply a thick coat of crackling medium (figure A). Be sure to cover all surface area, and don't allow to sit longer than 24 hours.

  3. Apply acrylic paint over the crackling medium. The key is to do so in a long, downward stroke. The crackling should start immediately. Don't go back over this area.

  4. If you want to use a damp sponge to apply the paint, the cracks should be smaller. Notice that the sponging technique was used on the left, while the paintbrush technique was used on the right (figure B). Allow to dry for 24 hours once the crackling has finished.

  5. Apply a spray sealer before antiquing.

  6. Apply antiquing medium to take the edge off the white finish and to emphasize the cracks.

  7. Add flowers with a double-loaded brush of red and white paint (figure C).
