Figure D
Decorative painter Donna Dewberry from Plaid Enterprises demonstrates how to make a handpainted spring table centerpiece with inexpensive clay pots (see photo at right).

Materials:

clay pots
acrylic paints (Plaid brand was used on the show.)
paintbrushes (Plaid One-Stroke brand brushes were used on the show.)
antiquing medium (Plaid brand was used on the show.)
cloth

Steps:

  1. Apply a base coat of paint on the exterior of the pot.

  2. Dampen a 3/4-inch brush with water and remove the excess with a paper towel.

  3. Double-load the brush (figure A) by dipping one half in one color and one half in another. For example, for an apple, use red on one side of brush and yellow on the other. For a plum shape, use purple on one side and white on the other.

  4. Paint an apple shape on the pot (figure B), using the red side of the brush on the outside edge of the apple and the yellow on the inside. Continue to blend colors until the yellow looks like a highlight on the apple. Use the same process to paint pears, plums, etc.

  5. Use a thin brush to paint vines (figure C), stems and leaves, using green paint.

  6. Once the paint is dry, apply antiquing medium and rub with a cloth (figure D).
