Melanie Royals of Royal Design Studios demonstrates how to create the look of embossed metal by applying silver or gold leaf over dimensional, raised stencil designs.
Materials:
stencil
tape or spray adhesive
molding paste
2" putty knife
wallpaper smoother
fine sandpaper
black paint
water-based size
foam brush or roller
aluminum leaf
soft brush
black/brown antiquing glaze
water-based sealer
Steps:
- Position the stencil securely with tape or spray adhesive.
- Apply molding paste over the design area with a putty knife (figure A), building up an even layer of material approximately 1/8- to 1/4-inch thick.
- Use wallpaper smoother to further level the material and remove ridges.
- Remove stencil (figure B) and allow to dry completely.
- Sand lightly to remove any ridges, then apply a base coat of black paint.
- Apply an even coat of water-based size with a foam brush or roller (figure C). Allow to dry for approximately 20 minutes.
- Apply aluminum leaf by carefully "rolling" it out from between layers of tissue paper (figure D). Avoid touching with hands.
- Use a soft brush to smooth and push into areas between the stencil design.
- Apply antiquing glaze and let dry (figure E).
- Apply the sealer to protect the surface.
