Judy Scarboro adds a timeworn look to a brand-new pine chair.
Kitty Bartholomew and designer Judy Scarboro give some tips on how to easily add that timeworn look to a brand-new piece of pine furniture:

  1. Use three shades of brown furniture wax, in the following order: light, dark, medium.
  2. Use an awl for aging (you can also use a chain). Be sure to use a light touch-you don't want to damage the furniture, just add character.

Work in stages, and remember that the distressed finish should mimic the natural wear a piece of furniture experiences. Thus a chair should have a darker finish toward the edges, and the area of greatest wear would be on the seat, where the friction of use would cause the finish to lighten.
