Materials:
white latex water-based primer
wool sponge
acrylic paint (red and oxblood)
water-based crackle medium
2" painter's brush
low-sheen medium beige latex paint
small bowl of water
large round artist's paintbrush
white latex paint
Steps:
- Cover surface with white latex water-based primer and let dry.
- Completely cover surface with red paint using slightly dampened sponge and allow to dry.
- Add a mottled layer of oxblood paint over red background using sponge--make this very inconsistent to achieve depth and color variation that will show through the crackled top coat. Let dry.
- Cover surface with water-based crackle medium--brush on and allow to set up 30 minutes (the heavier the crackle medium the more defined the cracks will be).
- Brush on beige topcoat in horizontal and vertical strokes for more variation in cracks.
- As cracks develop while paint is still wet, use a damp finger to pull away paint in random areas.
- After paint has dried, dry-brush white latex randomly over cracked and exposed paint for the appearance of paint that's turned chalky.
