Materials:
small "wool" natural sea sponge
primer - Rust-Oleum outdoor grill flat black
paint (either brush on or spray paint)
Plaid's Folk Art acrylic #611 barnyard red
Plaid's Folk Art acrylic #942 honeycomb
Plaid's Folk Art acrylic #938 licorice
disposable foam or plastic tray
optional paints for outdoor use
Benjamin Moore #1204 exterior flat latex
Benjamin Moore #1048 exterior flat latex
Benjamin Moore flat exterior black
Steps:
- Clean the surface to be painted, making sure that it is free of dust, dirt and grease.
- Apply two coats of Rust Oleum flat black to the surface according to directions. Let dry overnight.
- Pour a little of each acrylic onto the tray. Wet the sponge and wring out any excess water. Dip the sponge into each of the three colors and apply to the surface, working over the entire area. Without rinsing out the sponge, pick up additional colors as needed.
- The appearance of age will be determined by the colors you use. To simulate a more rusted look, add more red and honeycomb and less licorice.
- After obtaining the desired look, rinse out the sponge and let the surface dry one to two hours before using.
