Materials:

old painted or unfinished peg rail
yellow base coat latex paint
black latex paint
shellac sanding sealer
mask
gloves
sand
heavy file
steel wool
wood stain
wood glue
clear furniture wax / acrylic spray

Steps:

  1. Begin with a rail that has the pegs removed. Base coat the rail with black latex paint. Allow to dry.
  2. Paint the rail with a coat of shellac sanding sealer. Note: Use precaution when working with shellac sanding sealer. Wear a mask and gloves while working with it, and do not store in plastic containers as the sealer can eat through the material.
  3. Before the shellac sanding sealer dries, sprinkle sand over the wet surface. Let dry.
  4. Once dry, coat the sand-imbedded surface with yellow paint. Let dry.
  5. File the peg rail surface with a heavy file or scrape with a rough edge.
  6. Paint the pegs with dark wood stain. Let dry.
  7. Hammer the pegs into the rail.
  8. Seal the finished peg rail with furniture wax or acrylic paint sealer.
