Materials:

16- x 20-inch white mat board frame
large and small fleur-de-lis foam stamps
stamping paints
black-and-white photocopies of handwritten script and old documents
plain white bond-weight paper
collage medium
antiquing medium
4 small plastic containers
scrap paper
small flat synthetic bristle paintbrush
wedge applicator sponges
paper or plastic plate
glass or plastic container

Steps:
  1. Pour small amounts antiquing medium and each color of stamping paint into separate plastic mixing containers. Dilute each color of paint with water until it reaches the translucent, watery consistency of traditional watercolor paints.
  2. Paint the photocopies and plain white paper with the antiquing medium and diluted paints. Let dry.
  3. Pour a small amount of each color of stamping paint on a paper or plastic plate. Using a separate wedge sponge for each color, ink and print the two fleur-de-lis images on the color washed papers. Wash and dry the stamps thoroughly when changing paint colors. Let dry.
  4. Tear the paper around each print into a jagged rectangle, or into a shape that follows the contours of each fleur-de-lis image.
  5. Place the prints on the mats, rearranging their position until satisfied with the design. Try layering smaller shapes over larger ones and printed papers over plain. Attempt to maintain a good balance of colors in the layout.
  6. Apply collage medium to the backs of the torn paper shapes using the flat paintbrush. Affix each shape to the mat, wrapping the edges of the larger pieces around the sides. Apply the coat of collage medium to the surface of the squares, smoothing out any air bubbles that develop. Let dry.
  7. If desired, protect mat with a second coat of collage medium. Let dry.
