Steps:
- If the ceiling medallion is already installed, have an electrician remove it for easily handling and painting.
- Whether old or new, the medallion needs to be primed. Brush on a coat of latex primer. Allow to dry for three to four hours.
- Apply a base coat to the entire surface, and allow to dry for three to four hours.
- Brush on a coat of adhesive size. This is the glue that will hold the leaf in place. It will appear milky when first applied, but it dries clear. Drying time is two to four hours. Note: The adhesive size tends to pool into crevices and recesses. Use a brush to pull out any excess. Once this step has been completed, wash out the brush thoroughly with warm water and soap.
- Once the adhesive size is clear and tacky to the touch, apply the gold or copper leaf. The leaf is applied over the entire surface and pushed into the crevices with a clean dry brush.
- Use a soft cotton cloth to rub (burnish) the leaf smooth. Avoid touching the leaf too much because the oils in your hand can tarnish the surface.
- Brush on the satin sealer with an inexpensive bristle brush. Discard brush after using for less clean-up time. Let sealer dry overnight.
- Apply the patina paint over the entire surface with a brush, making sure to get into all recesses. Immediately after applying this patina (before it dries) use a lightly dampened cotton cloth to remove the excess paint from the high surfaces, leaving the patina in the recesses. The more paint left on the surface, the greater the aged patina effect. The more paint is removed, the shinier and newer the metal effect. Let dry overnight.
- Install the medallion and light fixture.
