Materials:

wooden tray
masking tape
tracing paper
photocopy of any selected design
steel wool
pencil
colored art pencils (oil)
steel wool
light gray acrylic paint
blue acrylic paint
darker colors of acrylic paint such as brown or dark green
water-based varnish
small and medium paintbrushes

Steps:

  1. Base-coat the entire surface of the tray with the blue paint. Allow to dry.
  2. Paint one coat of the light gray over the blue. Allow to dry.
  3. Photocopy the chosen illustration to the correct size for the tray, and lay tracing paper over it. Use a pencil to trace the design.
  4. Follow the instructions on the tracing paper to transfer the design onto the tray.
  5. Use oil pencils to outline the design and fill in any desired colors.
  6. Once designs are complete, allow them to dry, then distress the tray with steel wool.
  7. To further antique the tray, apply the darker green or brown paints using a dry brush. The oil in the pencils will still allow the design to show through.
  8. Add a protective coat of varnish and let dry.
