Materials:

wooden object (plate, table, etc.)
crackling liquid
sponge brush or bristle brush
latex paint (one color for the base and another for the top coat)
antiquing stain and a clean sponge (optional)

Steps:
  1. Paint the wooden object with regular latex paint, and let it dry.
  2. Cover the base coat with enough crackle medium so that it is shiny when dry. Let it set for 24 hours. Add another coat of crackle medium if necessary.
  3. Brush on the top coat of paint. The cracks will begin to appear almost immediately. For smaller cracks, thin the paint with water before using it. About 1/2 cup of paint to 1/3 cup of water works well.
  4. To produce an antique finish, brush antiquing stain onto the item. Immediately wipe off the excess with a sponge.
