Add character to a new brass planter with this antiquing technique.
Materials:

brass items - drawer pulls, knobs, switchplates, planters, etc.
masking tape
fine-grade sandpaper
brush
burnt umber oil paint
artist's oil
100 percent cotton rag

Steps:
  1. For a basic antique finish, tape any areas of the brass item that should remain shiny. Roughen the areas to be antiqued by sanding them with a light, circular motion. Remove the tape, and notice how the two finishes--one shiny, one distressed--contrast.
  2. To antique a drawer knob, switch plate or other sculpted form, dip a brush first in the burnt umber paint and then in the artist's oil. Apply the mixture to the item, and wipe off the excess with the rag. The mixture remaining in the indented areas will give the entire piece an aged look. Hardware with "crevices" works particularly well with this treatment.
  3. Let the mixture dry for 24 hours, and make sure the hardware has completely dried before attaching it to furniture.
