2. On the wrong side of one piece, measure/mark a rectangle in each corner 10 inches down from the short edge and three inches in from the long edge to create a stitching line/casing (figure A). 3. Put fabric right sides together and stitch along the marked lines and then along the long sides using a 1/2-inch seam allowance (leave the shorter ends open). Cut the excess from the corners and turn right sides out. Press.
4. Fold a double hem on the end by turning it down three inches, and then another three inches. Press sharply and use a size 18 or jeans needle and a large stitch length to sew along the folded edge with a 1/4- to 1/2-inch seam allowance. Repeat on the other end.
5. Measure in 1-1/2 from the edges of the long sides and draw a line. Stitch along the line, and then use a seam ripper to open the small seam on each end from the outer edge to the new seam line to create a casing for the rope.
6. Cut the dowel into two 52-inch lengths. Drill a 1/2-inch hole about an inch from each end for the rope. Paint or stain as desired and let dry.
7. Cut the rope in half and wrap one end of it and the screw eye with tape for easy threading. Thread the rope through the long side casing and remove the screw eye. Repeat with the other piece of rope on the other side.
8. Put tape on the ends of the rope to prevent fraying and insert the dowels through the short casings on each end. Make a knot in the end of the rope, and then thread it through the corresponding hole in the dowel. Make another knot on the other side of the dowel to secure it. Repeat on the other end until both dowels are secure. Secure rope to the hooks on the hammock stand.
