Sugar Cane Mat Rug

Glue a fabric border to a sugar cane mat for a rug that coordinates with any room in your home.

scissors
tape measure
hot glue gun/fabric glue sticks
painter's tape
non-skid rug backing
tapestry fabric

Steps:

1. Cut mat to desired size and bind edges with tape.

2. Cut one piece of fabric for each side wide enough for hems and to fold in half lengthwise to fit over mat edges.

3. Fold and press raw edges of fabric borders and glue in place to create 1/2-inch hems. Fold in half and press.

4. Starting on a short end, glue the border to the front and back of the mat. For a mitered look, fold the excess of one piece under on each corner.

5. Turn mat over and brush backing onto rug as directed to prevent slipping.
