Antique and vintage textiles are being put to new use inside Country Home magazine's two design showhouses in Grand Central Station. Carol Sheehan, the magazine's editor, shows how everything from quilts to shawls to draperies can update the look of a country home.
  • Old linen curtains are used to dress up a pencil-post bed frame (figure A). Lacy tablecloths at the head and foot of the bed create a cocoon effect. The coverlet and shams were made from a blanket that was crocheted by hand and the dust ruffle was pieced together from embroidered curtain panels.
  • A yo-yo quilt becomes a window treatment when hung from a swing-arm bracket ( figure B).
  • Tie an old scarf or tablecloth around a chair for an instant update.
  • Recycle damaged quilts, sections of mattress ticking or vintage tablecloths into colorful throw pillow covers (figure C).
