Seasonal Shelf Skirts
Decorating With Style : Episode DWS-1044 -- More Projects »
Materials:
Velcro Half and Half Hook and Loop tape
1/2 yard of fabric for ruffled skirt
1/2 yard of base fabric and 1/4 yard of top fabric for picnic skirt
decorative trim or ribbon
pearl cotton cording
wooden shelf
Steps:
Decorative Shelf
- Finish shelf as desired and attach adhesive half of hook and loop tape to the outer edge.
Ruffled Skirt
- Cut a band of fabric three inches wide by the outer measurement of the shelf plus one inch. For the skirt, cut a piece of fabric six inches long (or desired length ) by 2-1/2 times the outer measurement of the shelf.
- Press the band in half lengthwise, wrong sides together and open flat. Sew the sew-on side of the hook and loop tape to the right side of the band along the center fold. Turn under 1/2 inch and press along the edge of the band on the opposite side of the hook and loop tape.
- Fold band right sides together along center crease and stitch along the short edges. Trim seams.
- Press a one-inch hem along the bottom edge of the skirt and topstitch it in place. Sew decorative trim along the bottom of the skirt piece, starting about one inch above the hem.
- Zigzag over the cording to hold it along the top edge of the skirt portion. Pull on the cording to gather the material.
- Pin the right side of the band to the wrong side of the skirt and sew together . Pin the folded edge of the band over the gathered skirt seam so the seam allowance is covered. Topstitch close to the fold and attach skirt to shelf.
Picnic Skirt
- Cut the bottom fabric the length of the shelf's outer edge plus one inch by 14 inches long. Cut outer fabric the measurement of the outer shelf edge plus one inch by 10 inches long. (Lengths may be adjusted as desired.)
- Fold each skirt in half lengthwise with wrong sides together. Stitch along short edges. Trim seams; turn right side out, and then press.
- Place the layers with right sides together (outer layer on top) and raw edges even. Stitch along raw edge and then flip the top skirt open so the ensemble is flat .
- Stitch sew-on strip of hook and loop tape along the seam on the bottom layer only. Fold the top layer over so the tape is exposed (and the seam is hidden) and attach skirt to shelf.
