Lace and embroidered designs lend a romantic touch to bedroom shams. Fill a small one with lavender for a special gift.
Materials:

batiste fabric
flat (insertion) cotton lace
iron
water-soluble marker
tear-away interfacing
edge-joining foot
scissors (regular and blunt-nose )

Steps:

  1. Measure pillow and cut a piece of fabric for the front to that size plus two times the flange, which measured 3-1/2 inches on the featured pillow. Embellish the fabric as desired with embroidery.
  2. For the back, cut two pieces of fabric each about 2/3 the width of the front piece and the same length. Fold a double seam on the inside edge of each; press, and then place the back pieces over the front (right sides together) so they overlap. Sew pillow sham with 1/2-inch seam allowance.
  3. Turn right side out and press. Measure in 3-1/2 inches and mark a line on each side. Sew along those lines to create the flange.
  4. Draw a curved line along the flange with the marker. Use many pins to hold the lace along the line and steam it in place. Pull the lace draw cord to gather it slightly , which flattens it.
  5. Apply interfacing to the back and sew the lace in place with a straight stitch . Use the edge joining foot to sew a narrow satin stitch along the outer edges of the lace with coordinating thread.
  6. Turn the pillow over and carefully trim the fabric away from the back of the lace with blunt-nose scissors to reveal the design.
