Figure A
Materials (for an 16-inch pillow):

one 10" center square
two 3-1/2" x 13-1/2 strips of a contrasting fabric
two 3-1/2" x 13-1/2" strips of a second contrasting fabric
16" square for the pillow back
trim, fringe or cording

Steps:

  1. Make a paper template of a 16-inch square with a 10-inch square in its center and add border lines (figure A).
  2. Cut fabric as above adding one inch to each measurement to allow for 1/2-inch seam allowances.
  3. Pin border pieces to center square with right sides together and sew from the edge to the halfway point of the center square. Repeat on each side.
  4. Press seams open and with right sides together, continue each seam through the remainder of the center square and the end of each strip. Press seams open.
  5. Pin and stitch ribbon, trim or double cording over each seam. Note: To make double piping, cut a three-inch-wide bias strip of fabric and place a piece of cord on the wrong side of the fabric. Fold fabric over it and stitch in place using a double cording foot for best results. Place a second cord next to the first and fold remaining edge of strip to center and stitch in place on the opposite side. Trim excess fabric.
  6. Baste bullion fringe to the right side of the pillow front, keeping the edge of the fringe even with the pillow edge and the fringe facing the center of the pillow .
  7. Sew pillow front and back with right sides together, leaving an opening for turning. Turn right side out and press. Insert pillow form and slipstitch the opening .
