Host Mary Ellen Pinkham shares ideas for using shampoo for household tasks.
  • If a wool sweater shrinks, try soaking it in lukewarm water and shampoo (see photo). This will soften the sweater fibers, making it possible to reshape it. Pull and stretch the sweater while in the shampoo solution. Place the sweater flat on a dry towel or on a sweater rack to dry.

  • Shampoo makes an excellent all-purpose stain remover. Shampoos contain grease cutters and ingredients to lift grime and dirt away. It's also great to use if clothing gets stained while traveling. Most hotels put small bottles of shampoos in the rooms.

  • Shampoo will remove ring-around-the-collar stains from dress shirts. Simply rub the shampoo into the stain and wash as usual.

  • Add a teaspoon of baby shampoo to a quart of water and water seedlings. This solution will soften the soil and make it easy for seedlings to push through.

  • Soak hairbrushes and combs in warm water with a capful of shampoo for 20 minutes. The shampoo will remove the hair oils.

  • Shampoo makes a great substitute for shaving cream. Another option is to pour it into the tub for a nice bubble bath.

  • Use shampoo as a makeup remover. Just rub it on and remove with a cloth, then use skin cleanser as normal.
