Materials:
100% cotton or rayon muslin
Dazzle Dye (Turquoise, Dark Blue, Yellow)
Dazzle Dye spray tops
table salt
latex or rubber gloves
plastic trash bags and table cover
paper towels
scroll hanger or dowel with knobs
iron-on interfacing
iron-on fleece
twine, cording or ribbon
Steps:
To Dye
- Cut muslin about five inches larger all the way around than the desired finished scroll (the featured scroll is 14-1/2" x 36", which allows two inches to turn over for the rod pocket). Soak in a solution of five tablespoons soda ash (included in dye) and one-cup table salt per two to four quarts of water. Soak for 20 minutes . The fixer solution can be saved and reused.
- In the meantime, prepare a dyeing area by taping down a plastic trash bag onto the work surface. Remove the fabric from the fixer solution; squeeze out excess moisture and spread flat on the work surface. Pleat radiating lines from the bottom left corner (make the folds about 1/2 inch high).
- Add water to the dyes as directed. Spray yellow dye on one side of the folds and turquoise on the other. Push the folds together and spray the edges with the dark blue dye. Allow to rest for four to eight hours or overnight.
- Rinse completely with several changes of water, and then wash with dish detergent . Line or machine dry. The extra dye will keep its potency for two to three weeks if kept cool and away from bright light.
- Dye the fabric (18" x 24") for the candle mat in the same way. Fold in half lengthwise and arrange the pleats in radiating lines from a center point on the 18-inch fold.
To Assemble the Scroll
- Fold and press the edges to make a 1/2-inch hem all the way around. Cut a piece of iron-on interfacing slightly smaller and iron it to the back of the scroll following manufacturer's directions.
- Cut the dowel to size and place it along the top of the scroll. Fold the fabric over the dowel to make a pocket and stitch or glue it in place. Put knobs on the ends of the dowel if desired and tie a piece of twine or cord to either end for hanging .
To Assemble the Candle Mat
- Cut a piece of fusible fleece about 1/2 inch smaller than the candle mat. Fuse fleece to the wrong side of the mat.
- Sew the sides of the candle mat with a 1/2-inch seam, sewing into the front part but leaving about four inches open for turning. Turn right side out; press and slipstitch the mat closed. Once on the wall, tack the bottom to it to prevent the mat from blowing in front of the candle (jar ones are safest to use).
