Materials:

cotton canvas
cool water
sponge
1 Tbs. alum
small cans of enamel paint
large container
trash bag
stirring sticks
newspapers to lay material on after process is complete
waterless hand cleaner (optional)

Steps:

  1. Create a mixture of two cups water and one tablespoon alum. Sponge evenly onto all canvas surfaces.
  2. Place trash bag around container and fill with two to three inches of water.
  3. Slowly pour paints onto surface of water and swirl with sticks to create a marbled pattern.
  4. Hold the sides and gently lay material onto the surface of the water. Press the fabric firmly into the water and paint mixture and submerge for a few moments.
  5. While holding the top two corners of fabric, pull it vertically out of the water, allowing gravity to pull the paint down over the fabric.
  6. Place the wet canvas on sheets of newspaper until dry.

Variation: Rather than pouring the paint onto the surface of the alum and water mixture and dipping the canvas, the paint may be poured into a squirt bottle and sprayed onto the canvas.
