Floor Mats

Carol Duvall Show : Episode CDS-116 -- More Projects »
Design Originals originator Suzanne McNeill drops by to share her secrets for converting a plain straw floor mat into a decorative element for a foyer. Since such straw floor coverings are widely available in nurseries, discount stores, and home improvement centers, just about anyone can follow Suzanne's routine for placing an "autograph" in an entryway.

Materials:

straw/woven grass floor mat
cotton or linen in different colors
large-eye needle
graph paper

Steps:
  1. Cut the cotton or linen fabric into strips.
  2. Thread one strip through the needle.
  3. Loop the needle through every other opening in the floor mat, along its sides and over its edges. You can finish deocorating the floor mat by tying a large bow in its center.
  4. In the center of the mat, you may desire to weave in a design, write the word "Welcome," or write your name. If you plan to add such an embellishment, it's a good idea to sketch out the design on a piece of graph paper before you begin to weave.
