Embossed velvet adds a special touch to any project, but it is often very expensive and difficult to find. Mary O'Neil, from Hot Potatoes, shares her ideas for using common household items to form luxurious embossed velvet.

Materials:

velvet - silk, rayon or other made from all-natural fibers
iron
spray bottle filled with distilled water
big, bold rubber stamp

Steps:
  1. Place iron on wool setting with no steam.
  2. Using the spray bottle, mist the right side of the velvet.
  3. Place the stamp image right side up on your ironing board.
  4. Lay the moistened fabric, right side down, against the stamp image.
  5. Press iron to fabric. If the face of the iron has vent holes, try to make contact with area on the iron that is solid. If this is difficult, carefully move iron by lifting and replacing it a few times.
  6. Heat stamp and fabric about 30 seconds.
  7. Continue over entire piece of fabric until complete embossing is achieved.
Mary's Note: The embossed velvet should be dry cleaned, rather than laundered, to preserve the embossing.
