Materials:
linen fabrics (sage and tan)
grosgrain ribbon
6 to 8 colors of velvet (with rayon and acetate fiber content)
cotton fabrics to match each velvet color
double -stick fusible web
leaf stamps
press cloth
spray bottle
embroidery scissors
needle
iron
Steps:
1. Determine desired size and shape of runner and sew two bands of tan to the sides of a larger band of sage. Fold in half lengthwise with right sides together and trim ends into desired shape (a point is featured). On right side, sew or fuse grosgrain ribbon over the seams.
2. Use this top piece to cut another sage piece for lining. Put right sides together and stitch with a half-inch seam allowance, leaving a 10-inch opening for turning . Trim excess fabric on points and turn right side out. Press and hand-stitch opening closed.
3. For the leaves, cut the velvet, coordinating cotton backing and webbing into six-inch squares. Place the velvet with the right side (or nap) on the work surface . Remove one side of the paper from the fusible web. Place the webbing, paper side up, with the sticky side against the back of the velvet square. With a hot iron (wool or cotton setting), glide the iron just above the layers without touching it to the paper. Remove the remaining paper; place the square of cotton fabric on top of the adhesive layer and fuse as above.
4. Place the velvet side over the rubber stamp and lightly mist the cotton lining with water. Cover it with a press cloth and press the iron (avoid using the area with steam holes as they'll interfere with the design) with normal pressure over the fabric for approximately 30 seconds (the stamp design will transfer to the velvet ). Repeat procedure for all velvet colors and stamps.
5. Carefully cut around each leaf image (the fusible web prevents fraying). Scatter leaves over runner as desired and use a few hand stitches to hold each in place.
