Figure C
Host Kathi Cardinalli shows how to use a flea-market-find antique quilt to make a wonderful holiday table runner.

Materials:

recycled or damaged quilt
thick piping
decorative ribbon
pins
matching thread
sewing machine

Steps:

  1. Cut a strip of quilt approximately two feet wide. The length should suit the table you have in mind. Save the binding so that the top and bottom edges will already be completed.

  2. Make a trip the fabric store with quilt in hand. Choose a coordinating color of thick piping as well as decorative ribbon.

  3. Slide the piping into the cut side (figure A) and pin down the cut edge next to the cording.

  4. Deal with the raw edge by pinning down decorative ribbon (figure B), then sewing the ribbon with a zipper foot running close to the edge of the piping. Use medium-length stitches and take out the pins as you sew.

  5. For the ends, fold the piping down--under and in--covering it with decorative ribbon (figure C). Secure with pins. Sew by hand for a clean, finished look.
