Natural fibers add an organic touch and can be used to make table runners, place mats, wall hangings and window shades.
Materials:

soft raffia, rattan or other natural matting (comes in rolls or by the yard in craft or art supply stores)
scissors
ruler
iron
embroidery needle with large hole
small roller
bundle of raffia
cowrie shells, beads or crystals (optional)

Steps:

  1. Cut raffia matting 18 to 24 inches wide plus one inch and to desired length plus one inch to cover the top or extend over the edges. Work carefully so it doesn 't fray. Turn edges under and flatten with a small roller.
  2. Thread raffia through needle and secure hems using a running stitch close to the fold.
  3. If desired, embellish edges or corner of runner with shells, beads or crystals by sewing them in place.
  4. Paint, stencil or stamp raffia matting to create a custom look.
