Embroidered Place Setting
Decorating With Style : Episode DWS-963 -- More Projects »
Materials:
natural or tan grass fiber
scissors
bright-printed heavy fabric (Kente design )
sewing machine
steam iron
fusible tape
contrasting colored burlap (black , dark brown or dark red)
embroidery machine
embroidery backing
hand-stitching needle and complementary thread
Tip: When making a number of place settings, save time by starting the embroidery machine first so that it's working while making the mat.
Steps:
Mat
- Cut the grass fiber to the desired place mat size (follow one thread all the way with scissors). Tip: This type of material tends to unravel easy so don't handle it too much.
- Measure around the edges to determine the trim length. Cut four fabric strips slightly longer than needed to easily match up the repeats. Decide strip placement and stitch to one side of grass fiber to create a border.
- Turn seam allowance under for a nice finish and fold cloth strip back onto itself . Crease with iron and fuse in place.
Utility Pocket
- Embroider desired design on burlap with embroidery backing while making the mat. When done, cut a large enough square/rectangle to accommodate utensils and turn edges under. Press in place and stitch along the top seam.
- Position pocket on lower left of mat and stitch it in place on the sides and bottom.
Napkin Ring
- Cut a long wide strip out of black burlap to accommodate the napkin, allowing for seams.
- Position a smaller, complementary beaded design on the strip, adding embroidery backing according to directions.
- Once embroidered, remove the strip and fold it onto itself allowing for a two - to three-inch opening. With right sides together, straight-stitch the ring closed and cut off excess. Turn so that right side is facing out. Turn raw edges in around the circle and stitch by hand to finish.
Napkin
- Cut square to size plus a 1/2-inch seam allowance.
- Press edges to crease and fuse in place.
