This table topper uses quilting stencils to make an intricate design.
Materials:

stencil set (Victorian Damask #G1003)
permanent markers (copper and gold)
chamois tool or sea sponge
48"-wide primed canvas
acrylic paint (cream, celery green and soft sage)
tape measure
yard stick
pencil
scissors
thick tacky glue
satin spray acrylic finish
gesso or flat latex paint
painter's tape
bricks or heavy board
heavy-duty glue

Steps:

  1. Prime backside of canvas with two coats of gesso or any flat latex paint. The top is already primed.
  2. Cut canvas as per table size plus 1-1/2 inch hem. Base-coat front of canvas cream and let dry.
  3. Measure in 8-1/2 inches from the edges to allow for the hem and a seven-inch border. Mark lines with pencil.
  4. Tape-off center rectangle (the featured one is 16 inches square) and paint celery green. When dry, dip chamois tool or sea sponge into soft sage and dab over celery green. Then dab on some cream and let dry.
  5. Put corner design in place and trace it. Turn it over to make the coordinating side of the motif. Repeat on all corners and outline marks in copper marker.
  6. Find center of border and trace design as above. Repeat around cloth and go over lines with gold marker.
  7. Use as many stencils as desired for Victorian damask look. When finished, turn under hem, glue and weigh down with bricks or boards. Apply two layers of clear coat to seal front.
