Materials:
table with insert for a glass panel top (glass is not needed)
water-based primer
latex paint to coordinate with chosen fabric
plywood, cut to fit tabletop insert
fine sandpaper and tack cloth
densely woven, smooth fabric, same size as plywood plus 2 inches on all sides
painter's tape
spray glue or wallpaper paste
water-based varnish
*Large enough to cover plywood with at least 2 inches extra on all sides.
Steps:
- Remove glass from the table and prepare the table to be painted. Prime and paint with two coats of latex paint.
- Paint both sides of the plywood with primer.
- Lightly sand the cut edges and the top of the plywood. Wipe dust away using a tack cloth.
- Position the fabric with the wrong side up and iron. Center the plywood onto the fabric. Cut the fabric to fit the plywood, leaving at least a two-inch allowance on all sides.
- Lift the plywood from the fabric and cover the fabric with spray glue or wallpaper paste. Place the smooth side of the plywood onto the side of the fabric that is coated with the adhesive.
- Turn over the plywood so the fabric-covered side is on top. Working from the center out, smooth the fabric onto the wood. Turn the plywood over once again and glue the fabric edges to the underside. If working with a curved piece, make small 'v' cuts in the excess fabric before adhering to the underside to make the overlaps smooth.
- To protect the fabric once it has been attached to the plywood, apply a water-based varnish and allow to dry. Apply a second coat. Lightly sand the second coat of varnish, wipe with tack cloth, and apply two more coats. Let dry.
- Attach the panel to the table.
