Donna Babylon, from Pellon, creates a stunning no-sew fall table runner using burlap, leaf shapes, buttons and cording. Materials:
rectangular piece of dark burlap or other fabric with texture for bottom layer (size as desired)
rectangular piece of light burlap or other fabric with texture for top layer (size as desired)
strips of fusible webbing such as Pellon's Wonder-Under
fabric scraps in fall colors for leaves
burlap scraps for leaf backings
fabric-covered buttons
sheet of fusible webbing such as Pellon's Wonder-Under
scissors
iron
craft or scrap paper
Steps:
- Select two colors of burlap, one dark (for the bottom piece) and one light (for the top piece). Babylon used light and dark brown. Size according to your table size, or as desired.
- Hem the dark burlap with paper-backed fusible webbing.
- Fold up one side of dark burlap 1/2" and press. Do the same with the remaining sides. Place webbing along each 1/2" seam and iron over paper backing, using a hot iron on "dry" setting.
- Remove paper backing and fold hems up. This will produce a clean finish on all four edges.
- Fringe the edges of the light burlap (top layer).
- Iron webbing onto all four edges of the light burlap piece.
- Remove the webbing backing and center the top, lighter piece over the bottom, darker piece of burlap. Iron down.
- To create leaves to embellish the runner, draw freehand patterns onto paper and cut out. If desired, fold lengthwise before cutting so that they will be symmetrical.
- Select a variety of scrap pieces of fabrics in fall colors. Iron paper-backed webbing (from a sheet rather than a roll) on the backs of these pieces.
- Iron webbing to scrap pieces of burlap. Draw each leaf pattern onto the paper backing, and also onto the webbing that's attached to the fabric.
- Cut out the fabric leaves along outlines. Cut burlap leaves slightly larger than the fabric leaves so some of the burlap will appear when the two pieces are put together.
- Place the burlap leaves paper side up and lay a craft wire atop each.
- Peel the paper backing from the fabric leaves and place each leaf on top of a corresponding webbing leaf, allowing the burlap to show around the perimeter. Iron to fuse together.
- Bend leaves to provide dimension.
- Position leaves in corners and around edges of burlap. Add covered buttons as embellishments. Either hand-sew or use fusible webbing to attach leaves and buttons.
- Trace and cut out miniature leaves from various scraps of fabric.
- Apply webbing to the backs of small leaves, scatter leaves on center of runner, and iron down.
